New Hair, New Makeup!

3/16/2016

You have probably figured out by now what kind of makeup looks best for your hair and skin tone.  And for that, you deserve a round of applause.  It usually takes someone years of trial and (at times embarrassing) error to find that sweet spot.  But because our taste in style can change with the seasons, we usually find ourselves trying something new with our hair, namely the color, at least a few times in life.
Does that sound familiar?  Have you recently made a big color change and wondered "what am I supposed to do with my makeup now??" If so, you are not alone.  Personally, I LOVE a good drastic change. With that being said, I believe there's certain things you can do to make the transition a lot smoother.  Just a few little tweaks that can prevent the feeling of panic every time you start your beauty routine.

Follow these basic rules, and you will be ready to tackle any hue you choose!

Brunette
Brunettes can get away with being a little more adventurous with makeup because dark hair serves as a focal point on it's own, meaning your makeup won't stick out like a sore thumb.  Use warm or neutral beige foundation applied evenly to cover any uneven skin tone.  Don't be afraid of color on your eyes. Try a dark mossy green, deep smokey violet, or neutral gray shadows. Pair with peachy or rosy blush. Don't forget your eyebrows! They will need special attention if you have naturally light hair.  Warm-toned red and peach lipstick usually pairs well with brunettes. If you choose a bolder eye look, reach for a nude lip choice instead!

Blonde
For the same focal point reason, blondes have to keep in mind that their face will usually catch attention first.  Use cool or neutral-toned medium to full coverage foundation. Neutral brown, golden, gray smoky eyeshadows are great for enhancing eyes without overpowering. Use rosy or pink blush, but go light on bronzer, it can easily go overboard and look orange.  Don't do your eyebrows to dark,  and make softer lines when filling them in. DO have fun with lip color in cool toned pinks and reds, especially when paired with a simple eye. Steer clear of coppery lips, and be mindful when choosing a nude shade, so that it doesn't wash you out. Overall, "less is more" is a good rule for blondes.

Red
Most redheads pull off the understated look well.  Try a  light-weight foundation, even just a mineral powder. As a general rule, cool (blue) toned reds should be paired with neutral foundation, and warm (orange, bronze) with neutral/warm foundation. For eyeshadow, bronze, warm brown and neutral/green tones complement red hair nicely.  I personally love simple eyes with a clean liquid liner and luscious lashes. Try to stay away from pink or red blush, it will be an overwhelming amount of red.  Instead, stick to peach/coral shades.  Because red hair is already so vibrant, you can get away with clear or sheer peach for lips. But if you are feeling adventurous, reach for a dark, rich red lipstick.

"Out with the old, in with the new" is an age old saying, and we seem to hear it a lot at the beginning of a new year.  While that saying may hold true for most things, I have a few items I would prefer to keep around in 2015. Without further ado, I present my 2014 Favorites List: a guide to some of the makeup that kept me and all my clients glowing over the past year.

CHANTELL AND ZACH

Nothing beats the winter blues like marrying the love of your life, and looking like a bombshell in the process!  Chantell did just that when she married Zach this past December.  I just happened to be lucky enough to have a small share in such a happy day!

Winter is infamous for dry and rough skin, so one of the biggest focuses of Chantell's getting ready process was flawless skin.  Although we didn't have the time to do a full facial prior to makeup application, her foundation still looked perfect.  How? I was hoping you would ask...

I started Chantell's foundation with a light moisturizer, followed by a pore refining primer. This combination answers the skins "help me!" pleas by smoothing out rough areas and quenching dryness.

Usually at this point, many people would be grabbing for the concealer, ready to layer it under foundation. I prefer not to do this when doing wedding makeup because I want it to last all day, and not look caked on. Instead, I opt for a foundation that can do the work of the concealer, like MAC Studio Sculpt foundation. Or as I call it, my magic wand.  Sculpt has fantastic coverage and is super hydrating, yet does not feel too heavy.  It can even be used to cover more difficult blemishes, like scars.

I locked the foundation into place with a setting powder, namely MAC Mineralize powder or NYX Studio Finishing Powder.  This step creates a picture perfect airbrushed effect! To top it all off, I finished with highlighter and blush, and a little bronzer.

The finished result for Chantell and her bridesmaids was skin that looked like it has never seen a day of harsh winter air in it's life.  Take a look at the gallery of pictures from their wedding, and see the beautiful canvases I got to work with!

JESSIKA AND DAVE

On September 1, 2014, I had the privilege of doing makeup for the wedding of a long time friend.  Jessika and I go way back to the age of making snow forts, singing on the trampoline, and laughing 'til our faces hurt.  Well, a long time has passed since then, and we have outgrown two of those things.  Fortunately, there is no amount of years that could keep us from cracking each other up, which made her wedding day makeup SO FUN.  In the spurts of time between laughing, we were able to get her looking flawless and all ready to meet her Groom. Her easygoing attitude was so easy to work with made everything go so smoothly. For someone who normally doesn't wear a lot of makeup, that was a wonderful thing. And I'm so thankful that Ashley Erin Photography was able to capture these awesome moments!

The look we picked for Jessika was a mix of earth toned smokey shadows in the outer corners and crease and fresh dewy highlights in the inner corners and brow bone. We added a thin black gel liner and a few pieces of false lashes to be the cherry on top.  It went a little bit like this:

"the big day"

8/20/2014

On August 24th, 2012 I said I do.  Now, as we are rounding home base on the 2nd year of being married, I have been thinking about all the magic and excitement that accompanied "The Big Day".

There are so many details that go into a wedding day, but to a Bride, not one of them is less important than the others... with one exception. Even though months of planning has gone into preparation, its always the last minute details like hair and makeup that seem to be at the top of the importance list.

That's where good makeup inspiration comes into play.  Brides will Pinterest and Google image search for what seems like a lifetime before their wedding.  Which is a fantastic idea. But for any brides-to-be out there, here's a few tips to help you decide on the right wedding look for you.

  • Know your skin tone - warm, cool, or neutral.  This will help determine the color pallet of your entire look.
  • Decide on the level of intensity you are comfortable with - what is your daily makeup routine like?
  • Are you willing to try something new and adventurous, or would you like to keep a natural look?
  • Stay away from looks that close up the eye.
  • Gravitate towards dewy or glowy looks.
  • Let your makeup artist contour. You may feel like a clown during application, but the photo results speak for themselves!
  • Most importantly, do a trial!  Don't be afraid to say what you like, don't like, and would be willing to change.
